MoI to Receive Applications for the Distinguished Scholarship Award as of October

And Organized Forum for Emirati Scholarship Students

As of this upcoming October, the Ministry of Interior will start receiving applications for the second edition of the Distinguished Scholarship Award, following the success of the first edition, which witnessed significant turnout from UAE students studying abroad, who presented a number of creative and innovative ideas that were mostly transformed into successful projects for the service of the Emirati community.

Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Ali Bin Daen Al Ghafli, Head of the Organizational Excellence Department at the Ministry of Interior, inaugurated on Wednesday the introductory forum about the Ministry of Interior’s Award for Overseas Scholarship Students. In his speech at the forum, he explained that the award aims at bringing distinguished and creative Emirati scholarship students throughout the world under the spotlight. “The award is also designed to encourage students to embrace innovation and creativity in police and security work fields, including traffic, civil defense and correctional establishments; in addition to non-security areas that serve institutional work. The award also reflects the prestigious representation of the UAE abroad,” he said.

 

He called upon Emirati students abroad to participate in the award, and to provide creative and innovative ideas that best represent the Ministry of Interior abroad in an honorable and cultural way. He also pointed out to the police leadership’s keenness to support the participation of Emirati students abroad and to motivate them to submit creative projects that the serve the Emirati society.

Lieutenant Colonel Al Ghafli said that all scholarship students affiliated with the Ministry of Interior or other governmental or private institution in the UAE who are studying in any country across the world are eligible to apply for the award. The application file must be prepared by the candidates or by experienced competent people.

Captain Mohamed Al Hinai, Head of the Internal Awards Section at the Organizational Excellence Department at the Ministry of Interior, gave an overview about the award, its goals, standards and participation schedule. He explained that the award is comprised of two main categories, the National Representation Award and the Innovative Ideas Award. The National Representation Award will be offered to the three top-achieving and distinguished students who best represent the UAE and reflect the Emirati identity by respecting the laws and regulations of their educational entity, or by participating in community-based activities and environmental volunteer work, and by excelling in their academic and scientific fields. The Innovative Ideas Award shall reward creative ideas that achieve a distinguished institutional performance, and provide a modern solution to problems, so as to ensure success in improving and developing institutional performance in the country.

 

He pointed out to the general terms and conditions to apply for the award, which are done according to the regulatory framework, and explained that available application forms must be used, and one form should be filled per participation. Students are allowed to participate in both awards and to submit more than one innovative idea, subject to presenting a different application form per participation.

Captain Al Hinai revealed that winner of the National Representation Award is not allowed to apply for the second edition of the same award until the following edition; however he is allowed to apply for the Innovative Ideas Award. Applicants have to be scholarship students at the time of the award. a team of Emirati students can apply for the Innovative Ideas Award, and the application forms  should be prepared by the candidates without referring to a third consulting  party.

Adding further, Captain Al Hinai noted that the second edition of the award was launched on November 26, 2015, and that the assessment of applications will take place on the 11th of October. A ceremony will also be held in December to honor the winners of the Distinguished Scholarship Award. Moreover, he gave an overview of the excellence features and characteristics of the winners in the previous edition of the award, as an incentive for this year’s participants. They include: winning international awards; participating in volunteer work, as well as official and unofficial events; bringing the role of Emirati students in volunteer and humanitarian work under the spotlight; learning foreign languages other than English (Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and others); and choosing Emirati students as ambassadors for their university, which is testament to their distinction and good conduct, and representing international institutions.

Captain Al Hinai praised the previous editions’ participations, commending the keenness of the winners to submit ideas for vital and pioneering projects, notably the invention of a new male DNA profile, superior to any other male DNA profile, which makes it a valuable asset in forensic and criminal matters. “Another important idea was establishing a reliable documented research database tackling the most prevalent genetic disorders and tumors in the UAE and the Arab world, which would allow more effective treatment and achieve the exchange of scientific information between Europe and the UAE,” he said. Moreover, Captain Al Hinai cited the innovative idea of using copper-alloy on doorknobs and hospital beds, as well as other innovative projects that have been turned into concrete projects for the service of the community.

 

Additionally, Captain Al Hinai pointed out that the Innovative Ideas award aims to achieve a distinguished institutional performance, and provide a modern solution to problems, so as to ensure success in improving and developing institutional performance in the country in various areas of work, according to specific criteria.  “The proposed creative idea should contribute to realizing the overall objectives of the UAE government and should be relevant to a specific problem and provide an adequate solution. The proposed creative idea should meet the innovation and excellence standards, , it should be easy and applicable and achieve a positive impact on performance and society,” explained Captain Al Hinai.

 

He said: “The National Representation Award will be offered to the three top-achieving distinguished students who best represent the UAE and reflect the Emirati identity by respecting the laws and regulations of their educational entity, by participating in community-based activities and environmental volunteer work, and by excelling in their academic and scientific fields. This is done according to specific criteria, notably highlighting the national identity and traditions of the UAE through the different activities and events organized by the educational entity, and the entity representing the UAE (Embassy/ students affairs follow-up office and others). Other criteria include respecting and abiding by laws and regulations and education of the host country and of the academic institution; maintaining public property; showing good manners and morals; respecting principles; and exerting outstanding efforts in the theoretical and scientific attainments; endeavoring to develop additional extracurricular capabilities and skills (through specialized courses and workshops), and to enhance communication with the Embassy/ students affairs follow-up office, as well as with members of the host community, in order to learn the culture and enhance language skills. The 100 point marking scale is designed to assess each criterion that should be taken into account and highlighted in the participation.

 

It is worth mentioning that a number of scholarship students took part in the debate and submitted suggestions and ideas that highlight the culture and traditions of the UAE society. They also stressed their commitment to effectively participate and represent the UAE in a bright and civilized image.
